APPLICATION FAQ'S
Q: Why do you have to apply?
The interest in this opportunity is high. As part of the yearbook staff, students receive special privileges that are not given to most students so there is a required level of professionalism and maturity. There is also only a limited number of spots for yearbook.
Q: Will everyone who applies get in?
Not all students who apply will be selected.
Yearbook class will be limited to the top 18-25 applicants. (The majority of those selected will be 8th graders with just a few 7th graders)
Q: Will everyone who applies for yearbook make it to round 2?
Not all students who apply will be invited to round 2. Applicants must make the scoring cutoff to come to round 2. Around 75% of applicants scored high enough to make it to round 2 last year. We may not need a round 2 this year, an announcement will be made on Canvas.
Q: What is the application process?
Q: Is there a separate 7th grade yearbook class? Are there two yearbook classes now?
No, there is only one section of yearbook which will be combined with both 7th and 8th grade students. There is a very limited number of spots for current 6th/incoming 7th grade students as the class is mainly for 8th graders. So students who applied in 6th grade but were not selected are highly encouraged to apply in their 7th grade year.
Q: How are students selected?
Applications are scored on a point system. The majority of a score is based on the teacher evaluations and writing samples. Following all of the directions and completing the entire application is also another factor. Students must turn in a completed application on time in order to be considered for the class. Students must maintain good grades; no D’s or F’s in any classes. Students must have at least two positive teacher recommendations (part of the application process).
Q: If I didn't make the cutoff or applied for and didn't/did get into National Junior Honor Society (NJHS), will that impact my chances of getting into Yearbook?
No, NJHS is completely separate from these. The judging/scoring of applications is a completely different process and they are evaluated by different people.
Q: If I applied for and didn't/did get into yearbook last year, will that impact my chances of getting on either staff this year?
No, not at all! In fact, it will make your application even stronger because it shows that you really want to do this. The majority of the staff is meant to be 8th graders, so we are looking for more outstanding current 7th/incoming 8th. Many current staffers applied to be on staff in 7th grade and applied again and made it on staff in 8th grade.
Q: Can you still participate in sports and other after school/out of school activities if you join Yearbook?
Yes, you absolutely can. Almost all of our Yearbook students are involved in multiple activities. Including multi-sport athletes (through school and club teams), competitive gymnasts and dancers, band, choir, babysitting, school plays, boy scouts and girl scouts, and a variety of other outside activities.
Q: What is the after-school commitment? How many school events will they be required to attend? How late do they stay after?
Unfortunately there is not a definite answer to any of these questions. It always depends on the students and whatever they happen to be working on.
Every situation is different, it just depends on the student, what topics they sign up for, and how well they plan and stay on top of their work. They just need to have the ability to stay after if needed.
Q: How does this work with scheduling? If I get in to yearbook, what other classes will I take?
When students create their schedules in school, they will NOT get to pick yearbook as a choice.
They will create their schedules as if they are not in the class. Once students are selected, Ms. Staub will send the list to the counselors who will then go in and change each students' schedule.
If a student is not signed up for a yearlong music course, this will just take one of their elective spots. They will still be able to take potentially four other electives such as art, tech apps, etc.,
If a student is signed up for a year-long music course (band or choir/show choir), they will keep the yearlong music and yearbook, and those would be their only electives.
If a student is signed up for a yearlong world language (8th grade only), they will keep the yearlong world language and yearbook - those would be their only electives all year.
If a student is signed up for a year-long music course (band or choir/show choir) AND a yearlong world language (8th grade only), they MUST be willing to drop one of the two or they will not be able to take yearbook.
If you want any other type of change to your schedule, once your student receives their acceptance letter, you can call the counselors to discuss scheduling options.
Please do not contact the counselors about altering your schedule until you have actually been accepted into the class. This helps avoid confusion and work for everyone involved.
